Funeral directors
Whether you want to take care of most of the arrangements yourself, or you need a full undertaker's service, simply type a UK geographical location into the search box provided and browse our extensive database of funeral directors to find a quality undertaker to meet your needs.
Below are some guidelines to help you choose a funeral director:
- This profession is unregulated in the UK, meaning anyone can become an undertaker, so try and find a funeral director who belongs to one of the three trade associations for funeral directors in the UK—the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD), the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), and the Funeral Standards Council (FSC);
- Ask friends and family if they can recommend a good undertaker and get them to phone a few undertakers to gather quotes on your behalf;
- Funeral directors should provide you with a detailed description of their services and a full price list;
- There are many additional costs including embalming, flowers, clergy, crematorium and cemetery, and doctors fees—make sure these are detailed in all the quotes you receive from funeral directors;
- Ensure you choose a funeral director who holds the diploma in funeral directing (DipFD), the professional qualification for undertakers;
- If you have financial difficulty in paying for the funeral, your local social security office will be able to offer help and advice.
The basic undertaker's service comprises the following:
- Offering advice and making arrangements for the funeral;
- Moving the deceased to a chapel of rest or mortuary;
- Providing a coffin and arranging for a hearse to take the deceased to a cemetery or crematorium.
Your funeral director will also be able to help you with many additional aspects of the funeral, including details such as flowers and the content of the service itself, if you require a fuller service.
To search our funeral directors classification, simply enter any UK location into the search box provided below, such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, or wherever you are in the UK.
