Finding a good dog groomer

The easiest way to find a good dog groomer is to go on the recommendation of other dog owners you talk to while out walking. People will be only too pleased to recommend their dog groomer, or tell you about dog groomers to avoid.

There are all kinds of grooming salon available nowadays, to satisfy even the most beauty-conscious dog. You can even employ a mobile dog groomer who turns up in a van equipped to do the grooming!

When you're considering a dog groomer, here are some key questions to ask...

  • How long have you been in business?

These days just about anyone can set themselves up as a dog groomer, but they may not have the experience to do a good job. So always ask how long they've been doing it.

  • Are you qualified as a dog groomer?

Ask what qualifications or courses they have been on. A good dog groomer won't be offended if you ask to see their credentials or ask for references from some of their customers.

  • Do you focus on specific breeds?

Some dog groomers only work on specific breeds (e.g. toy or small breeds). Make sure the dog groomer you choose has experience of grooming or clipping your particular breed of dog or you may be disappointed with the results.

  • Do you really know how to handle dogs?

As the dog groomer will be alone with your dog, it's important to ensure they can handle dogs well without being too rough. Ask to see them working with another dog before you commit yourself. Bear in mind that most dog groomers prefer you not to be present while they groom your dog as in many cases this results in your dog misbehaving.

  • Can you cope with my dog?

If your dog has already had a bad grooming experience or tends to be nervous or aggressive in certain situations, make sure the dog groomer is made aware of this and check that they are capable of handling the situation.

  • Here's what we want...

If you want your dog clipped in a particular way, make sure you tell the dog groomer. Don't go back to any dog groomer who clips so closely that they leave your dog with cuts to his or her skin.
