Doctors
NHS doctors' surgeries can help you with some or all of the following:
- Prescriptions and repeat prescriptions for medicines;
- Medical problems—from colds and flu symptoms to medical emergencies;
- Check-ups;
- Referals to other NHS health services;
- Travel advice and injections;
- Women's health (some doctors have separate contraceptive clinics);
- Minor surgery;
- Child health, including vaccinations;
- Sports medicine;
- Antenatal healthcare.
- Visit a few surgeries, practices, medical centres or clinics in your area, and choose one you feel comfortable in.
- Each doctors' practice will be able to give you a practice leaflet outlining the services their GPs offer.
- Opening hours vary from one surgery to another, so choose one with hours to suit you.
- Once you have joined a doctors' practice, you can make appointments to see any of the General Practioners within that practice, but try to visit the same one where possible, so you can get to know each other.
- Above all, choose a doctor you feel comfortable with—you'll be visiting them to help you with everything from colds and flu symptoms to medical emergencies.
- It helps if you have your medical card with you when you register with a new practice.
- When you move to a new surgery, your medical records will be transferred to your new practice by the health authority so that your new GP has access to your medical history.
