Questions to ask before you start to look:

  • How old will my child be when I go back to work?
Some day nurseries will take babies from as early as six weeks old, but many will only take older babies or children, so it is important to check that the day nurseries you are looking at offer places for the right age group.
  • Do I want a full-time or part-time day nursery?
Day nursery hours can vary greatly so be sure to check the opening times. Some also require a minimum amount of sessions, so if you are only going to work for a day a week, look carefully at the terms and conditions.
  • Should the nursery be near my home or my workplace?
If you commute any distance you need to decide where you want your day nursery to be. Nearer home might be more convenient, but may not give you enough hours at work.

What should I look for during my day nursery visits?

Now that you know what age group, hours and location you are looking for it's time to get out and visit those that meet your criteria. To help make your decision easier, here are a few pointers:

  • Happy kids: It sounds obvious, but do the children look happy? Do you like the atmosphere?
  • What about the staff? Are they engaging with the children?
  • Facilities: Does the day nursery have a decent outside space? Is a nursery-cam important to you?
  • Food: Does the day nursery prepare fresh food on the premises or does it bring it in ready-prepared? Are menus available?

Before you make the final decision:

  • Talk to other parents: It's not always possible, of course, but if you can find some other parents to talk to, you should get a really good idea of what the day nursery is really like, and what it can offer.
  • Visit at different times of day. Try to visit centres on your day nursery shortlist more than once. It will help you to make up your mind.
  • Check the certification. However much you like a group, don't accept a place in a day nursery until you have seen inspection certificates and reports and up-to-date public liability insurance.
  • Follow your instincts. Most parents will tell you that while it's important to tick the right boxes, the day nursery you choose has to feel right for you. If you feel confident in your choice then the chances are you have made the right one.
