What is a childminder?
Anyone who looks after children on domestic premises, usually in their own home, for more than two hours a day for payment is classified as a childminder.

How many children can a childminder look after?
A childminder can only have six children under the age of eight in their care at any one time. No more than three of these children should be under five, and usually only one can be under one year old.

Are there strict rules about numbers?
Yes. For one thing, a childminder's own children have to be counted in these numbers. Children between eight and fourteen can also be looked after in this mix so long as it doesn't affect the younger children's care. A childminder with an assistant can look after larger groups of children.

How do I know I can trust my child with a childminder?
A childminder must be registered with Ofsted, and they will be checked for references, training, police record and health. The home of a childminder is also regularly inspected to ensure it's safe.

But how can I be really sure they're OK?
Before employing the services of a childminder, ask to see their Ofsted inspection report plus their registration and insurance certificates.

Will the childminder have had training in childcare?
A registered childminder doesn't have to have any childcare qualifications, just a First Aid qualification and a certificate to show they've undergone an Introducing Childminding Practice course.

What if I still feel unsure?
It's a good idea to view the childminder's home to see what kind of environment you'll be leaving your child in. Is it clean? Are there lots of toys and games? Is there a garden or nearby park for playing in?

How else can I put my mind to rest?
Chat to the childminder. Ask how many children they care for and what their ages are, discuss what activities are on offer, their policy on discipline etc. Any reputable childminder will be happy to talk through your concerns so don't be afraid to ask questions.

What will a childminder cost?
A childminder will usually charge per hour, but as childminders set their own rates this will vary from area to area.

How do I find a childminder?
Contact the National Childminding Association or get a personal recommendation from other parents who use a childminder.
