Lost generation? No, just undiscovered

Posted by The Princes Trust in Yell Supported Charities on February 23rd, 2010

Britains lost talent 2Youth unemployment already costs the state £3.5m each day in Jobseekers’ Allowance.

Thousands of future nurses, teachers and plumbers could be lost if Britain fails to help unemployed young people into work. It’s no secret that young people have bourne the brunt of this recession. One in five is now struggling to find a job – the highest figure on record.

The Prince’s Trust is launching a new campaign, Undiscovered, which is calling for Government, business and individuals to help the charity raise £1m a week to support unemployed and disadvantaged young people.

Undiscovered: Britain’s lost talent?

The Prince’s Trust and Citi Foundation have undertaken one of the largest ever UK studies of young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs).

Findings suggest that the country could miss out on 19,500 doctors and nurses, 62,000 teachers and 1,500 plumbers, if young people are unable to fulfil their career aspirations.
“Britain cannot afford to stifle its young talent. We must invest in young people now, giving them all the chance to achieve their ambitions and become the key workers of the future.” Martina Milburn, chief executive, of The Prince’s Trust.

Every day The Prince’s Trust helps 100 more young people. More than three in four of those helped move into work, training or education. Each of their stories is different, but here are just a few.
