The Woodland Trust is calling for companies and individuals to make 2010 the year they fulfil their commitment to tackle climate change, whilst at the same time enhancing the UK countryside.

 Trees are nature’s own carbon capture and storage system–absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. The UK’s leading woodland conservation charity is encouraging companies and individuals to consider woodland creation through its Woodland Carbon scheme, as a means of mitigating their residual carbon emissions.

The benefits of Woodland Carbon are two-fold: Allowing companies and individuals mitigate their carbon footprints, as well as creating valuable wildlife habitats, aiding flood alleviation, offering wind protection and creating native woodland for people of all ages to enjoy. Expanding the UK’s native tree cover will play a vital role in helping us adapt to future climate change.
David Taylor, from the Woodland Trust, said: “Woodland Carbon is more than an offset because it not only allows companies and individuals to lock up and store their residual carbon emissions but also create new native woodland for generations to come to enjoy. Importantly for businesses and individuals in this country Woodland Carbon means carbon mitigation in the UK, rather than overseas.”
