I had the misfortune to stay at the White Bear last weekend as I was attending a Birthday party nearby with my family. I had tried to book into numerous places around Royston and the surrounding area to no avail as I was told there was an air show on at Duxford. We booked in advance two rooms, one double and one family room. When we arrived to check in we were told by a member of staff that we had a twin room and a room with three single beds, when we advised we had booked a double and family room we were told by the staff member 'well i didnt take the call so i dont know anything about it'. What an attitude to take with guests, after this we knew things could only get worse! We had to find our own way over to the B&B, when we opened the door we were greeted with a filthy hall and stair carpet. We had a toddler with us who's mother wouldn't let walk on the floor it was so dirty. This was nothing compared to the bedrooms we stayed in, first of all we had to share a bathroom with other people, the bathroom had cobwebs so big and old i was surprised the didn't pull the plaster off the walls and the toilet was soiled with faeces which had not been cleaned. The room carpet was stained all over, the net curtains were so dirty i couldn't see through them and the room smelt of stale cigarette smoke, there was also an old blanket crumpled up in the bottom of the wardrobe When I looked out of my bedroom window there was a table in the garden full of dirty mugs, glasses and also breakfast plates with food on them that had been sitting there for some time, there was also a bin in the car park which was full of maggots. My family and I had no option but to stay there as we had travelled a long distance and could not find any other accommodation in the area. Worst B&B we have ever stayed at.Report this
The White Bear

The White Bear is predominantly a pub but during the day they are quite well known for their pub lunches. They usually offer a weekday special £1 hot lunch which is extremely popular with local workers. This has previously been Bubble & Squeak and Egg & Chips to give you a couple of examples. My personal favourite here is their jacket potato with coleslaw as you couldn’t ask for better quality pub food. The prices are competitive and the place is a friendly and comfortable place to eat. The service varies but the speed with which the food is served is usually consistently good. As a pub this place proves to be a bit too popular for my liking with seats being limited and service being hard to catch the attention of. It can take as long as twenty minutes to get a drink on a Friday or Saturday night so I personally only tend to use this place during the day time when it isn’t so busy.Report this
