Longstanding draw for the Reading crowd tired of typically towny taverns. The bar features an eclectic mix of patrons - students and locals - along with two bars and a beer garden. A late licence means that it's always packed at weekends and best to turn up before 11pm to avoid the queues. I still shed a tear for the passing of the old London Street venue. It was the size of a broom cupboard, but still had plenty of charisma. Other staples of Reading night life have come and gone, but the Turtle still keeps going strong.Report this
An amazing atmosphere every day!

The Purple turtle is an amazing place. It manages to always be busy no matter what day it is. The crowd is a real mix with people from all walks of life feeling at home there. There is usually rock playing in the upstairs bar and harder stuff playing in the basement. To top things off it is open till about 5am every day so if you fancy an after party you know where to go!Report this
Whol doesn't love the Turtle?

The Purple Turtle. A Reading institution, full of an ecclectic mix of waifs and strays who have found themselves in the need of a beverage after the normal closing time. A very interesting bar, with a big enough beer garden and heaters - can't complain really!Report this

This is a strange place but the best place to end your night at the weekend. All the cocktails are great value for money and service is fast. The smoking area is always packed as there's a bar out there and heaters. Great atmosphere - everyone having a good time.Report this
Different, late drinking

This is a great spot if you want to drink well into the night. Very strange mix of people on a weekend evening. Because of its alternative image and late license you get those who are looking to continue their evening after the clubs close and those who are genuinely there for the venue and ambience. Good little outdoor area with heaters and there is a constant flow of alternative music. Just be aware that its not the cleanest pub with very sticky floors and pretty rotten lavatories. All round quite good fun and worth a visit if you fancy a late night.Report this
Purple Turtle Reading

The 'New' Turtle has been on Gun Street for around 15 years now and still attracts a great crowd. Not a place to wear your Sunday Best, the Turtle is full of Crusties, Emo's, Rockers and Students...plus Readings normal denizens. Purple colour scheme inside, broken up by classic movie posters and rock memorabilia, has a really nice feel to the place, as long as you aren't expecting a posh bar. Very friendly atmosphere, many times over the years I've gone along to the Turtle, with no specific plan or people to meet and always have ended up bumping into old friends, or making new ones. Good night pretty much guaranteed. Bad points: Food not Michellin star quality, dirty floor and peeling walls, but that's all part of the ambience. Toilets are rank as something in Trainspotting, especially the Mens (couldnt comment on the Womens without incriminating myself), but you get used to them after 5 or 6 pints and stop noticing!Report this
