The good thing about Pave is that it sells a nice pint of Theakstons XB and an occasional decent guest ale. On the down side, the place is dirty throughout, with staff who are clearly not trained in the basics of hygeine such as clearing and cleaning tables which have had food and drink spilt on them. The music is generally awful unless you're into tuneless jazz. In winter, the place constantly has a cold wind blowing through it due to selfish smokers who don't bother to close the rear door after they've been outside for their nicotine fix.Report this
Lively But Bland

Jazz on Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons, regular comedy nights which host decent acts, Pave is a lively venue for entertainment and part of the vibrant Princes Avenue café society. On their 2008 food inspection they got a B so obviously things have improved hygiene-wise since their earlier poor rating. The menu is tempting, but often the food has not lived up to expectations, being under- or over-cooked or simply lacking in taste. I tend to agree with the previous reviewer - Pave has lost its heart.Report this
Not what it used to be

Such a shame that Pave could not continue in the rich vein it began in. When it opened, Pave was a centre for Hull's bohemian community, an intimate and friendly bar with some good quality beers and tasty food. Since then it has suffered from over-exposure and is now like a cattle-market, particularly on weekends. The wait at the bar to be served is atrocious - there are too many people crammed inside and not enough bar staff (or fast enough bar staff) to cope with them. The quality of the beer remains high as do the guest ciders and the food, though recent poor scores in Council health & hygiene surveys has not helped. A shadow of what it used to be, Pave has now sadly been taken over by the "town crowd" and is no longer somewhere you can enjoy a quiet cappucino and a read of the paper. Sad but inevitable.Report this
