Such a shame

It used to be great - excellent food at great value , good beers & excellent staff. They have lost good staff & the food is now provided by "Posh Nosh" & it is poor quality. You pay for food & drinks separately - what does that tell you ? A great environment & I will miss not going there again.Report this

My partner and I went here last night with my parents for a pre-Christmas meal. We all had the steak (my dad the mixed-grill) and it was very nice. Although we had a table booked for 8pm, there was a waiting time of 30-45 minutes on the food. I would complain any other time but as they had a Christmas party of 17 in, I appreciate the busy hectic time they had. Although I have to say the waitress, although pleasant was so quick to rush off, half way through us asking her a question. The condiment bottles on the table were all empty, so my dad went to get some more and - empty! And the lighting (although I know 'Oldtimers' is known for this lighting mood) was very dark on our table, only a candle in a small jar to light it. My mum unfortunately suffered a semi-seizure at the end of her meal as of the dark lighting and then the background Christmas lights flashing. So we had to call it a night earlier than we would have liked to. A pleasant meal however, and huge portions! Also very good value for money, I think the bill came to £60+ for all of us, then it would have been a little more if we could have stayed as we would have had another drink each and coffees!Report this
Great lunchtime feast

Stumbled across this bar intending to have a pint and ended up having the lunchtime baguette. There were four of us and the food was truly amazing. Ample portions and a most pleasant atmosphere. Good barman who clearly knew his stuff. Enjoyed the whole experience. Would recommend to anyone wanting a decent drink and good food. Keep away from the chains and eat here!Report this

This restaurant is tucked away just off the high st but take the effort to look for it as the food is great. Make sure you have an empty stomach before you go because you will be well and truly full by the time you've finished with their portion sizes. It gets really busy so get there early.Report this
Largest portions in town?

The Old Timers restaurant in Exeter is one of the only places to go if you're particularly hungry in the city centre. The portion sizes border on what you might find in an American restaurant. Most of the food appears to have been home cooked and for this reason their meals seem to have a lot more flavour than lots of other venues. The Chilli Jacket potatoes are a particular favourite of mine. A friend advised me to try the pizza there one evening during their happy hour... in my opinion the pizza didn't hold a candle to some of their other more traditional fare.Report this
one not to miss

you could easily miss this place - although it's in city centre it's up a side street and then up a small alley just down from the timepiece night club - gets very busy though and there are good reason's for that. as a pub it has a good atmosphere 'till late and better than that go for the food - if you want quieter surroundings get a table upstairs and choose something from the extensive menu of yummy food on offer - you won't be disappointed if you like good british food and there's lots to choose from. if you feel up to it later go to the night club adjacent to the old timers and have a really good night out!Report this

Old Timers is a really cluttered busy pub and restaurant in Exeter. It serves delicious food in MASSIVE portions. I cannot emphasise enough how huge the portions really are. It is difficult to finish a meal (and believe me, I usually do not have a problem finishing food!) I would particularly recommend their steak and stilton pie. On a cold winter's day, it is lovely to go to Old Timers at lunchtime and tuck into a homely warming massive portion of steak and stilton pie with mash potato. Their baguettes are also delicious and very filling. Their desserts are absolutely out of this world and similarly generous portions. The staff are very friendly and chatty. Great place for decent homely pub grub.Report this
