Badly Let Down
24/08/2012 by Barrowby
I asked Nathan to come and quote me for a number of small jobs in the house. We are useless at DIY and needed holes filled in where shelves and stereos had been taken off the wall. Also needed a bracket fitted back on the wall once a hole had been filled. All the window frames needed caulking round and the window sills. The sink needed re-caulking. There was a hole in the kitchen wall that needed fixing and some loose plaster down by the radiator. Outside we needed a small bit of plaster fixed by an Apex roof and the brown lintels to be re-painted and the magnolia bits inbetween re-painted. Nathan came and said he could do the job and quoted me a days rate of £100.00. We decided to have him do the job as he seemed very nice and polite and we liked him. He turned up on the day we arranged on time and started work. Unfortunately it poured with rain all day so the outside work could not be done. I kept Natham supplied with tea all morning and at lunch time made him a toasted sandwich. At around 1pm he said he would have to come back another day when it was not raining to do outside and he would finish off the few bits inside then. He said as he had done half a day to just pay him the £50.00 which I did in cash. He said he would be back that Saturday if the weather was good but that he would ring first. For the half day Nathan had caulked round the windows and window sills and filled in most of the holes but not all of them and fitted the bracket for the shelf back onto the wall and the hook for the blind back onto the wall in the bathroom. I at Nathan's request had gone to B & Q and bought Sealant suitable for around the bath and kitchen sink, sand paper and plasterboard raw plugs. I had also already bought the paint for outside. After Nathan left I noticed that the holes were sinking and that the fittings that he had fixed back on the wall were still loose. I thought I would point this out when he returned on Saturday but he did not show. I called him and he said he did not think he had said he would come that day but anyway he would now come Wednesday morning. I mentioned the holes had sunk in and needed topping up and he said no problem. The next day I received a TEXT message from Nathan saying he had a big job that had come on and unfortunately he would not be able to come and finish my job. I texted Nathan back and said I had a feeling he would not finish the job but could he at least come and finish what he had done. I never heard back. What Nathan had done was useless. All the holes have sunk in. The bracket fittings are loose. A number of the internal jobs have not been done. The caulking round the windows and the window sills was messy. I have since called out 3 decorators to quote me for the work and each one of them were totally shocked by the poor quality of work done by Nathan all of which has to be done again. So I am having to pay again to have the job done properly. I am so angry, I would have preferred honesty in the first place and if Nathan was not able to do decorating work he should have said so instead of telling me he could do it. I feel badly let down, I made Nathan welcome in my home, I did not hesitate to make him food and drinks and I readily paid him for his half days work and this is the way I get treated. I think the right thing for Nathan to do would be to refund me the £50 I paid him. Sorry to say I certainly would not recommend him.Report this
