What a great pub!

I first visited this pub after a friend recommended it to me. He’d attended a beer tasting there with SA Brains on the day they launched their new menu. He’s been very impressed with the service and the new menu and had been talking about it for a while so I decided to pop in and see what he was going on about. I was not disappointed. The pub is huge, with a upper level dining room and a large outdoor terrace for drinking next to the river. It was cold when we were there but the heaters under their umbrellas were sufficient enough to keep us warm. The staff were very friendly and the staff certainly knew their stuff. The guy who served us knew a lot about the local and national ales and we watched him take the time to explain about Cask Ales to a group of American tourists who must have sampled and then bought every type of ale that they had on their pumps. They have 12 ales in total ranging from local Sambrookes and Fullers to national and regional brews such as Thornbridge and Brains. We didn’t eat at the pub but the food that was coming out from their kitchen looked and smelt amazing. I’ll definitely be back soon and this pub is certainly worth a visit if you are on the river path!Report this
Best avoided, but not a lot of choice.

I'm generally a fan of Nicholsons pubs in London, however this one is completely disappointing. Although it's a large pub, the bar area is almost always crowded, meaning you have to fight your way through the crowd to be served. Once you get to the bar, this is only the start of your problems. You then have to try and get the attention of one of the moody bar staff. Fifteen minutes later when you have finally acheived this you find that your drink of choice is off. No matter which drink you try to order first it will be off. When you do manage to place your order, what you actually recieve is a complete lottery. Especially when ordering food. We often visit the pubs along the south side of the river, as this is the last one before Tower Bridge you have to pay it a visit. Any one have any other suggestions for a pub close to the river between the Mudlark and Tower Bridge?Report this
Pub near London Bridge

The Horniman at Hays is a large pub located by the Thames between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. It is part of a refurbished wharf called Hays Galleria, and is a popular place for tourists thanks to its prime position by the river. The pub is spread out over a couple of levels. There is also a large terrace area outside by the river, which appeared to be heated. There is a small food menu, serving mainly traditional 'pub-style' food - I didn't eat there, but the desserts did sound tasty ; ) Service is slow, so maybe not the place to pop into for a quick pint at lunch.Report this
Worst pub in London
08/08/2007 by AlexWoods
UPDATE: This pub just cannot sink any lower in my estimation. Everything about it is terrible - the beer (not just the ales, even the lagers always taste off. Dirty lines?), the food, the staff, the management (by far the lowest point), the time you have to wait at the bar while gormless drones do F.A. (then sulk when you have the audacity to ask them to serve you drinks in return for ready money. One of the other of us has misunderstood the relationship I thought existed between barman/maid and customer... Maybe some one could enlighten me?) I know that may sound harsh but I just cannot put up with that place. It's just horrible. ----------------------------------------------------------- PREVIOUS REVIEW: Take a large public house, in a perfect location - views of the River, HMS Belfast, Tower of London & Bridge, Gherkin, St.Ps, large outside area, right by the station, add a varied menu and some interesting ales and beers. Then do everything you can to ruin this potential. It gets very busy due to it's proximity to More London Place but this is no excuse. The staff are largely (though not exclusively) surly and inefficient. The food is poor and inevitably takes ages to get to you, the beer is rarely that great, the bar never seems clean, lacks a friendly atmosphere (if you can detect an atmosphere at all), generally a poor experience. Having said all that, it is just TOO convenient for me and the views are nice. If you can keep it together for the 20mins required to get to the bar, get some one's attention, and actually get served a pint (wait to have it topped up/ filled/ the floating crisp removed) then give it a shot but don't say I didn't warn you. Would be interested to hear what other people make of it...Report this
