El Coto Newcastle has been open since April 2004 and is just a few minutes away from Eldon Square behind St James Park, ideal for hungry shoppers and for a pre or post match meal.
The dark wood floors and wooden ceiling beams combined with a simple, rustic décor offer a cosy and informal setting suited to both a quick bite to eat or a special occasion.
The restaurant has a spacious bar area where you can enjoy a drink before and after your meal and has dining space over two floors. The first floor restaurant is available for private functions. There is also a cosy, covered and heated courtyard for al fresco dining in the summer months.
The restaurant is situated on Leazes Park Road in part of the Gallowgate area of Newcastle and parts of the building are said to date back many years to the times when people were hung in the barn. The building is rumoured to be haunted...

El Coto is a truly authentic tapas restaurant - from the decor to the food and of course, the atmosphere. I was really impressed by the meals I've had there. The service is quick and friendly, the quality of the food is always excellent - all fresh ingredients and nothing looks or tastes like it's come out of the freezer and been defrosted (unlike many restaurants...) I went to El Coto on the recommendation of a friend, and have already told many more people about this lovely little place. It is romantic for a 'coupley' meal or date, but lively enough for a big group outing too.Report this

I am a regular at El Coto and the food is always spot on. Even though the menu has loads of different tapas, we always seem to stick to our favourites so there are still dishes we haven't tried yet! Sometimes the service is a little slow at busy times before a footie match but we love the laid back atmosphere and staff are friendly.Report this

I have visited el coto a few times now, mainly for special occasions as the set menu is a great way to keep everyone happy without having to worry about the cost, no arguments when everyone eats the same, The food is generally lovely though the last time I went it was poor though I have put that down as a one off, the atmosphere is good and the service is normally great. All in all a great place to have a meal with friends especially if you like tapas like myself. The location is also handy for a night out so I would recommend this place for people who want a bit of food before going out on the booze. That’s not to say the place is not equally enjoyable as quieter venue for food but I do prefer tapas when there is a group of people.Report this
