great hen night
08/10/2011 by DebbieHigson
Having read mixed reviews about Athens, I wasn't too sure what to expect. However I had a fabulous night there on my hen do. The food was lovely and there was plenty of variety on the menu (and very reasonable, £16 for 3 courses plus coffee) for veggies and fussy eaters too. The service was very good and I got dragged up to do some belly dancing on stage (luckily I'd drunk plent of wine - about £15 for a bottle of Rose) and there was plenty of Greek dancing on the pavement outside, plate smashing and the disco afterwards was lovely and cheesy. It's great for hen dos, xmas parties etc and you need to be up for a laugh with the right frame of mind - don't go there if you want a quiet romantic meal for 2!Report this

WORST BIRTHDAY I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! GUTTED!!! 4/3/11

Where do i begin..who is writing these reviews? did i go to the same place?? Arrived at this restaurant expecting a warm evening, but spent most of the time shivering due to the lack of heating.although the food was of a good standard it was very difficult to enjoy due to the temperature and lack of atmosphere a further shiver was sent down the spine being charged £108.00 for six bottles of a cheap rose and having to request staff return the change on each occasion. It did not help matters with a young member of staff being dismissive when asked to do so..dont want to go on..but there was so many problems with my evening..from no heating, over priceing(including being charged £5 for a glass of soda water) to being told that all rose was £18..etc..then entertainment,we had to do our own..the belly dancer didnt get anyone up,or the greek dancers..just feel sad for my sister..(She quoted)it was the worst birthday ever!) i think that sums it up..very dissapointed!!! would never never reccomend or attend this restaurant..not even (sadly)if i was given free tickets!! Oh and we never got our dessert???Report this

What a night !

We went to Athens on the 3rd of December What a night to remember –! The restaurant service was fantastic waiters and waitress polite and friendly considering it was a full house , the ambience of the restaurant was great, it’s not your ordinary sit down meal. I was belly dancing the night away … The entertainment with the Greek dancers was something to remember I had nether danced Greek style. The food is just amazing the quality of the food is brilliant, especially the variety of the dessert it really good especially when you have nether had such choice of variety of food! The variety of Greek wines also was superb. The amount of food we had was UN real! You have to go to Athens with an empty belly!!! Although my belly dropped off with the belly dancer, and dancing to tunes! I would definitely recommend this superb restaurant to a variety of people, any age! The evening rounded off was ‘Smashing’; it was a Friday ‘sit down’ meal to remember. ! I wouldn’t agree one bit with the comment underneath what you have said is opposite to what I would say, and also I think every other customer would agree on that! I will be going there again!Report this

What a great party menu...

What a great night we had with such a wide range of food available to everybody..for only £16!! There were 30-odd starters and about the same amount of main course dishes as well. The food was fresh and absolutely delicious, not to mention the very generous portions. A great range of Greek and International dishes complemented by a varied alcohol selection. The Greek dancers and the lovely belly dancer made it an unforgettable evening, rounded off with us all dancing outside and smashing plates just like they do in Greece. In fact, we thought we were in the capital Athens and not in Athens Restaurant!Report this

I went for a meal at Athens this February , first time though we walked in myself and my relatives and the atmosphere was lovely ! We were taken to our table with a waitior , the waitior was smashing ! He was polite helpful and had a humour , we then got served our food , tasty ! I never had greek food before so it was a new type of meal for me and my family we couldn't stop the food was smashing ! The food was presented well and tasted well , after eating the superb food we went outside and smashed plates It was superb the atmosphere was , then we had the BELLYDANCER! I was dancing on the tables learning some greek belly dancing ! After the dancing on tables their was late disco music with all the latest hits as well as some of the 80's 90's classics ! It was a superb night ! I will now be their regurlar ! I would suggest this to anyone who wants a smashing night !Report this

me and my wife have visited Athens greek restaurant on many occasions in the last 20 years. we go there because it is friendly, we know the same chef Christos for the last 20 years and his lamb kleftico and beef stifado is the best we have ever had, even better than in greece and cyprus. we like the greek atmosphere especially on the weekends and the comments before about the toilets is simply lies. it is the only greek restaurant in birmingham we know that has a Greek chef Christos, and greek staff. this is a very authetic greek restaurant well established for the last 20 years.Report this
Great Fun Night
03/09/2008 by piglit
I went here with a large group of ladies for my hen night and we had such a fun night. I had never had Greek food before but the waiters were really good explaining what the dishes were like and we were all having a taste of each others. When the entertainment started it was such fun. I am quite a shy person but as the hen I was dragged up to dance ON the tables. I am not a light person and it stood up to my weight no problem! We then went outside and were smashing plates in the street, that was such a laugh and the traditional image of a greek restaurant. All in all, a fabulous fun night and one I will never forget.Report this
Athens Roma - Filling food, lively entertainment!
01/09/2008 by Sapphire12
I was first introduced to Athens on a birthday meal out for an ex boyfriend's father. While I remember my meal (chicken) being lovely and well cooked, my overwhelming lasting impression was of the raucous ouzo drinking and the evening’s entertainment – which culminated in most of the diners dancing on the tables and in lines on the street outside. Since then, Athens has changed tact slightly, serving both Greek and Italian food - hence the Roma, but the dancing and entertainment still remains. My partner and I visited recently during an early evening weekday - where there was noone else but ourselves there. We treated ourselves to the three course set meal and wine. I had a mixed greek starter plate, which was beautiful - meats, rice stuffed vine leaves in tomato sauce, hummus, masses of salad and pitta bread. The stuffed vine leaves in particular were lovely. My partner had a huge plate of taramosalata and bread, which he had never had before and enjoyed, although I think slightly envious of my varied foods! For main, I chose vegetarian moussaka, as I do not eat lamb. I was so full from the generous starter, and my moussaka was served with more bread and salad. It was amazing - the nicest, cheesiest moussaka I've had - loads of vegetables in enough sauce to ensure it wasn't sticky or dry in the mouth. Much nicer infact, than one I'd had in Greece last summer. Pudding was the only disappointment - a tasty but pre-packaged chocolate ice cream ball. Still, after all the food previously we hardly had room! For three courses, a bottle of wine and tip we paid £50 for the two of us. The waiter was very attentive and couldn't have been more helpful with requests for information or help in choosing. After our meal he presented us with a complimentary shot glass each filled with a very strong traditional greek spirit (not ouzo) - definately the last thing we needed after polishing off the wine, but welcome non the less! All in all, I would recommend Athens Roma for a very filling, hearty meal. Its not a romantic location - although if you go at quiet times it can be a great place for a coupley dinner. But at night, it really comes alive, with diners-turned-revellers piling out onto the street outside for some ouzo fuelled dancing.Report this

Good location, not far from Broad Street and Snobs nightclub. A good night out all around but can get very busy and service can be slow if you go on a weekend. Good price will be going again nearer to Christmas! Live music is played from around 8pm and dancers come on later with a dj taking over later, it is quite lively and you do get up and have a little dance, one time our waiter pretty much dragged some of us up to dance! One additional good thing I will say about the food is when I was unsure what to have and not sure if I would like a dish or not, the waiter told me to try it and if I was not happy he would take it back and I would have something else and would not have to pay for the first item. Luckily I did like it as I was worried if I didnt I would have to wait ages for a new meal!Report this
