Check qualifications when picking a salon for hair removal

Check qualifications when picking a salon for hair removal

Finding a hairdresser or nail technician on recommendation is a cinch but not everyone goes around shouting about the wonders of their laser hair removal therapist.

Excess hair can be both embarrassing and inconvenient to remove.

So if you’ve taken the decision to undergo a course of electrolysis or laser hair removal ensure you’re in safe and effective hands to get the best results.

What qualifications should they have?

Checking the practitioner’s qualifications is essential. As these are specialised treatments it’s wise to choose a clinic that has a wealth of experience in delivering the treatments rather then a start-up clinic.

For electrolysis there is no clear way of finding out how good a therapist is other than asking questions. Check how long they have been carrying out the treatment, how long it usually takes to see results and request case study examples of their clients.

Look for specialist clinics

Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems used for hair removal should only be performed by fully qualified therapists, nurses, doctors or surgeons.

Jo Goodman, regional spa manager for national spa chain HeavenV, says: “One of the most important things to look for is that the clinics offering these treatments should be registered with the Care Quality Commission (formerly the Health Care Commission).

“Clinics need to follow certain standards for the safe operation and maintenance of these machines, and receive regular inspections to ensure that national minimum standards are followed. This way you can have confidence knowing that all staff are fully trained and licences and insurance are in place.”

Check the cost

Research costs for your preferred course of hair removal before you make your decision.

Some practitioners may charge a consultation fee and don’t forget to ask if estimated costs quoted are all inclusive, or if there any additional extras before you commit.

Questions to ask if you are considering laser/IPL treatments:

  • Can you give me more information about available treatments that may help me – do you have an information brochure?
  • Who carries out the treatment and what is their experience?
  • Are you registered with the Care Quality Commission?
  • Can you give me some idea about the cost?
  • Can I view your before and after treatment photographs?

Key Points

  • Check out the practitioner’s qualifications and experience
  • Ask questions about the treatment costs, expected results and case studies
  • Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems should only be performed by fully qualified practitioners
  • Browse through customers reviews – or leave your own – on Yell
