About us

A pub that has kept its traditional charm!

Welcome to a real pub

As one of the few traditional pubs left in the city of Winchester, The Eclipse Inn is a rare diamond. Nestled behind the High Street, the pub is something of a hideaway, but nonetheless extremely popular with all age groups. The black and white frontage with handsome timbers, small-paned windows and original oak beams creates a delightful ambience in which to relax and enjoy a drink and something to eat.

Steeped in heritage, this premises has existed in Winchester since around 1540, and today it retains that traditional charm, combining the feel of a popular local with a place of historical interest. This convivial mood is rare among city centre pubs, and what makes this one so unique. With no need for piped music or fruit machines, the unspoilt charm of The Eclipse is what sets it apart from the rest.

Our food

With outdoor seating just a stone’s throw from the cathedral grounds, this small pub can be deceptively spacious when it needs to be.

  1. great pub

The Eclipse is a fantastic little pub and one of my favourites in the area. You are made to feel so welcome by the staff and they have fantastic personalities. You can't help but love them! I've been here a few times only, and yet they still recognise your face and take the time to talk to you. Drink wise you have the usual selection and i'd say they are just that little bit cheaper than their competitors. The food here is so delicious. Traditional pub food is how i'd categorise it, but it tastes fabulous and you get loads! Like their sandwiches - great fillings! I've heard its meant to be haunted too - went there a while ago and thought the ladies toilet was haunted. The ghostie wouldn't let me in!

  2. Spooky

A cosy, friendly and unpretentious local's pub right in the heart of old Winchester. Food served in daytime. Had some great conversations with total strangers there, both at the bar and outside at the tables, which is where the smokers congregate these days. Allegedly haunted by the ghost of Lady Alice Lisle, this reviewer had a personal experience of the spooky side of the pub while using the ladies' toilet upstairs. Someone was banging on the door as if desperate to get in to the loo. I was just finishing up, so unlocked the door, only to find no one there at all.
